ST. LOUIS – The Martin Luther King and Eads bridges were closed in both directions for a short time after a barge struck a pier underneath the MLK Bridge Thursday afternoon.
A local public affairs officer for the U.S. Coast Guard says they notified officials with the Illinois and Missouri departments of transportation. Joe Monroe, a spokesperson for IDOT, says there are visible scratches to the pier, and they wanted to inspect it before reopening the bridge to traffic.
The Eads Bridge was closed as a precaution because the path of the barge took is unknown. A spokesperson for the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department says the Eads was brushed by the barge.
