ST. LOUIS (KSDK) - It's a huge day for the Arch grounds in downtown St. Louis.
Saturday, construction crews placed giant girders over Interstate 44 to connect the Arch grounds to the city it represents.
Missouri Department of Transportation crews started placing 40 steel girders across the depressed lanes of Interstate 44. Each girder weighs 14 tons and is 100 feet long.
The new land bridge will create a park experience from 4th Street to the Arch grounds. Organizers said this is a key part of the CityArch River 2015 project.
The girders will be in place by the end of the weekend. Landscape work will start at the south end of the Arch Grounds next month.
MoDOT will complete its work on the Park Over the Highway by the end 2014.
