ST. LOUIS - The community is taking action to protect a popular south St. Louis bar. They believe thieves are climbing to the top of a vacant building and then jumping across to the roof of the Venice Cafe to rob it.
The city says the vacant building belongs to a woman named Jennifer Roberts. City inspectors cited her Monday for missing and broken windows and defective doors. She has 30 days to get the place in shape or she will be fined again. The city also says she has not paid her taxes on the property for two years.
The Benton Park Neighborhood Association plans to hold a fundraiser to help the bar get some of the money back that was stolen in the burglary.
The side yard on the property is a separate parcel. It belongs to a man named Allen Yee. The alderman for the ninth ward, Ken Ortmann, says he's on top of the situation. He says he's tired of looking at the mess at the vacant building. He says if the back yard is not cleaned up soon the Forestry Division will take further action.
Police are still investigating the burglary. No arrests have been made at this time.
