ST. LOUIS (KSDK) – The Saint Louis Zoo's newest baby is making her first public appearance with her mom Wednesday.
The female Grevy's zebra foal was born June 22 and weighed 120 pounds. Her name is Makena, which means "happy one," in the Eastern African language of Kikuyu.
Her mother is 11-year-old Grevy's zebra Tiombre, and her father is 11-year-old Gao.
The Grevy's zebra is the largest zebra in its species and has the narrowest stripes, according to the Zoo.The zoo and Washington University researchers are observing the zebra family as part of a study that will provide data for researchers in the wild.
The foal and her mom will be at the Red Rocks area.
