ST. LOUIS (KSDK) – One person has been hospitalized following an early morning evacuation for an apartment building fire in north St. Louis.
According to authorities, the fire broke out Thursday at 1 a.m. in the 900 block of Hamilton Avenue.
Firefighters evacuated hundreds of elderly and disabled people from the apartment building as well as a neighboring five-story addition for smoke concerns. The fire was found on the second floor and was contained to one unit, but extensive smoke damage was found throughout the entire complex.
Residents were allowed to return to their apartments after 90 minutes of being displaced.
Paramedics threated three people for smoke inhalation, including one who was taken to an area hospital. That person is in stable condition.
The Red Cross is helping three families with food, clothes and shelter.
