FAIRVIEW HEIGHTS, Ill. – A man suspected of breaking into cars in Fairview Heights was surprised when one of the cars he attempted to enter Wednesday morning was occupied by police officers.

Fairview Heights police say around 1:55 a.m. two members of the department's hot spot team were conducting surveillance along St. Clair Road because of recent car break-ins.

The officers were sitting in an unmarked vehicle and saw a man walking between homes, turning a flashlight on and off.

The suspect was then seen putting items he was carrying down, and approached the vehicle the officers were inside. As he attempted to enter the vehicle, the officers identified themselves. The suspect ran from the vehicle, but was quickly apprehended by the officers.

Police say evidence was recovered at the scene, and they are following up on leads from previous reports regarding other area car break-ins.

The suspect is held at the Fairview Heights Police Department. If charges are filed, his name will be released.
