FERGUSON, Mo. - All of the unrest in Ferguson is having a ripple effect on other parts of the community. The shelves of the food pantry at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church are almost bare.
Reverend Steve Lawler says the church typically gets its supply of food on Mondays. But the local store where it does its shopping was closed Monday, so the pantry was unable to replenish its shelves.
"Everybody was very concerned about what was going on," says Lawler, "and I think the stores decided to stay closed rather than potentially risk there being some kind of a problem with them showing up and then having to deal with people or folks they were concerned about."
Lawler says dozens of people went without a bag of groceries Tuesday. He adds Ferguson is the last place in the metro area he would expect to go through something like this.
The church is looking for canned goods and boxed food. It's located at 33 North Clay in Ferguson, or call 314-753-7911.
