ST. LOUIS – Governor Jay Nixon named retired St. Louis Police Chief Dan Isom as the new director of the Missouri Department of Public Safety Wednesday morning.
Isom will replace former St. Louis County Police Chief and current director Jerry Lee who will retire after three years in the position.
Before retiring, Isom had worked in the St. Louis Police Department since 1988 and became chief in 2008. He was the 33rd chief of the department.
He stepped down in 2012 to become a professor of criminology at the University of Missouri-St. Louis.
The department oversees eight agencies and six programs, while the director administers the state's Homeland Security Program and state and federal funds.
His appointment is subject to confirmation by the Missouri Senate.
The former St. Louis police chief will be named as a part of Governor Nixon's cabinet Wednesday, NewsChannel 5 has confirmed.
