ST. LOUIS – 5 on Your Side is on scam alert with a hoax surfacing from Florissant to O'Fallon to across the country.

Jarred Thornhill was in his O'Fallon, Mo. home Monday morning when he got a call from someone claiming to be from the IRS. The person knew Jarred's name and said he owed money.

Then the caller got aggressive, telling Jarred he's being sued and asking him the best time to come and seize his property.

"Well, I knew it was fraudulent, so I said, second Tuesday of next week," laughed Thornhill. "Then they hung up."

Had the call lasted, the real Internal Revenue Service says the scammers would most likely have tried to have Jarred pay supposed over-due taxes with a pre-paid debit card or wire transfer. The IRS does not collect money that way.

The Florissant Police Department just put out an alert about this scam in its community, where people are posing as IRS agents and the police.
