GODFREY, Ill. - The Madison County State's Attorney's Office charged a 47-year-old Metro East woman for allegedly leaving her mother in deplorable conditions, contributing to her death.

The Madison County Sheriff's Office was called to a home in the 4700 block of Storeyland Drive just after 7 p.m. on January 1, after a woman called to report the death of her mother. Deputies met with the caller, identified as Marjorie E. Phillips, who said that she found her mother, 71-year-old Marjorie B. Phillips, dead in the home.

Phillips told deputies she left home the day before and had been gone for about 24 hours before returning at approximately 5:30 p.m.

Deputies reportedly found the interior of the home to be in deplorable condition, with, dishes, debris, and household goods piled up throughout the residence.

Investigators discovered evidence of neglect during a search of the home, and an autopsy also revealed evidence of neglect.

Marjorie E. Phillips was charged with criminal neglect of an elderly person and remains in Madison County Jail on $250,000 bond.
