BELLEVILLE, Illinois (KSDK) – St. Elizabeth's Hospital will build a new replacement facility in O'Fallon, Ill., according to officials.
The new facility will serve as the new St. Elizabeth's Hospital, which is a part of the Hospital Sisters Health System, along Interstate 64 and Green Mount Road. The existing hospital will be converted into a health care services building featuring physicians' offices, radiology, labs as well as several administrative offices.
A few years prior, the health system purchased land for development in O'Fallon but no progress has been made on it since then.
The new hospital will host 144 private patient rooms, an emergency department, operating rooms, intensive care unit and inpatient rehab.
The current building has been in Belleville for 60 years, and officials cited deteriorating conditions as well as a need for updated facility.
No timeline has yet been announced for when the facility will be built and opened.
According to officials, St. Elizabeth's Hospital will submit an application to the Illinois Health Facilities and Services Review Board for a Certificate of Need for plan approval.
Belleville Mayor Mark Eckert released the following statement after the Wednesday morning announcement:
I am certainly disappointed that, despite repeated requests, St. Elizabeth's Hospital has been unwilling to meet with the City of Belleville to explore a modernized hospital in Belleville. The City of Belleville does not oppose a modernization of St. Elizabeth's Hospital; however, the City does oppose it being done in a way that abandons the downtown Belleville area, deprives Belleville's residents of the essential access to healthcare they have come to depend upon, and unnecessarily disrupts the commerce that has built up around this hospital over the last 100+ years. I am further concerned that what is motivating this proposed move could be more related to questions of payer-mix and service area than of maintaining access to care for those in need. Nevertheless, I am confident that the benefits lauded by St. Elizabeth's (jobs, construction, continuity) can all be achieved in Belleville without the fundamental disruption to our downtown area and the Belleville community. The City of Belleville remains prepared to discuss how to pursue a new St. Elizabeth's in Belleville and, if necessary, the City of Belleville remains prepared to voice our opposition to abandoning Belleville's downtown area.
