EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. (KSDK) - A 44-year-old Benton, Illinois woman was killed early Monday morning after the vehicle she was riding in crashed into a tree along Illinois Route 4, the Madison County Coroner's Office said.

According to Madison County investigators, a passerby reported the crash just after 2:05 a.m. near Blue Spruce Lane in St. Jacob Township.

Police said the driver, a 26-year-old woman, fell asleep while driving and veered off the road. She was airlifted to a St. Louis hospital with non-life threatening injuries. The passenger, identified as Diana Reginato, was the driver's mother. She was pronounced dead at St. Joseph Hospital as a result of neck trauma.

Both Reginato and her daughter were wearing seatbelts.

Toxicology testing will be performed as the Illinois State Police continues its investigation.
