EAST ST. LOUIS, Ill. (KSDK) - Rehab work on the Martin Luther King Jr. Bridge has been postponed, the Illinois Department of Transportation said Monday.

The project to repair the bridge deck had been, originally scheduled to start this August, had a bid submitted that was considerably higher than IDOT's previously estimated cost. IDOT opted to revise their estimate and plans and resubmit the project for bids later in the year.

Because of the intensive nature of the work required, the bridge will have to be closed for several months. As a result, IDOT will coordinate its schedule with the Missouri Department of Transportation's ongoing work on the Poplar Street Bridge to minimize traffic problems.

Repairs on the MLK Bridge are expected to take place in the summer of 2015.
