Ferguson (KSDK) - The Department of Justice is assuring citizens it is ready to help make change.
Representatives from the department sat on a panel at a town hall meeting Friday night. Over 100 citizens turned out bringing concerns ranging from lack of voter participation, to claims of inequality.
One suggestion the department made was forming a citizen-led commission to help oversee the Ferguson Police Department. The Ferguson Mayor says he has already made that recommendation to the city council.
"We want to make sure people know that we're listening. We want to make sure people realize that some of their concerns, we understand. And that we're doing something about it," said Ferguson Mayor James Knowles III.
The Department of Justice says it will be in the area to help see the commission through, along with any other changes to help rebuild the St. Louis region.
"You have the attention of the President and the Attorney General. We are here not to collect information, we are here to assist," Department of Justice representative Rita Valenciano said.
