COEUR d'ALENE, Iowa - You've heard of burglars sneaking in through unlocked doors, but a winged intruder was much bolder, flying through a 10-story window in Idaho, and attacking one couple's beloved pet.

If birds have feelings, this little guy has been through a lot. An owl attacked his fellow feathered friend yesterday and killed him.

"The killed bird was sitting by the water down there. He didn't really consume it much, I think just mostly killed it," said Don.

Don and Sue Sausser woke up to a trail of yellow feathers first thing in the morning. After investigating what happened, they heard a "thump" behind the cabinet.

"And I looked over there and there was the owl actually there and he flew right past me and out the door," said Sue.

The couple says the bird was only about 7 inches tall and think it's a saw-whet owl. Don was able to snap these pictures as it sat on their 10th floor balcony before it took off. He thinks that's where it entered the house also, but is unsure when it happened and how long the bird was inside.

"We leave that door open at night we don't have a screen," said Don.

A very unusual scene. Not only did the owl get in the apartment, but it was able to enter the canaries' cage.

The other bird suffered a bite on his wing.

"Yesterday he was kind of cautious and today he's pretty good, he's pretty good, although I haven't heard him sing yet today," said Sue.

Just when they thought the bird would be silent the rest of its life, a sign of hope.

"Oh there you made it sing!" said Don.

The couple may get another canary, but right now they want to see how their surviving bird does on his own.
