NEWARK, N.J. (WCBS/CNN) - A dog from New Jersey is now an international traveler, but not by design.

A United Airlines flight was supposed to take the six-year-old Springer Spaniel from Newark Liberty International Airport to Phoenix.

But he ended up overseas.

Hendrix, who gets his name from the jet-setting rock star, wound up on a long journey inside a crate, starting with a seven-hour flight to Ireland.

The dog then headed back to Newark before another five-hour flight to his original destination.

Now, United Airlines is in the dog house with Hendrix's owner.

"The point was they put a live animal on a plane to go internationally. And it was just not called for. It was just not right," said Edith Alback.

United still does not know what led to the mix-up.

The airline has given the dog owner a refund and released a statement saying the airline is "taking steps to prevent this from happening again."
