SEAGROVE, N.C. -- Eighty-four-year-old Neil Meisch fought off an armed man after he showed up at his doorstep and pointed a gun at his wife.
WFMY News 2's Liz Crawford met Bonnie and Neil Meisch. Thursday night, they were getting ready to go to bed when someone knocked at the door.
Bonnie said, "Like an idiot, I opened the door."
The man had a gun and demanded that Bonnie give him her car keys.
"I said like hell you're going to get my keys. It'll never happen and he said yes it will and he put his gun further up to my face," Bonnie told WFMY.
Neil, a former military police officer, took him down by pushing through the door and whacking him in the face in the front yard.
Neil said, "I go after him because I don't want him to kill my wife. I don't know what he's going to do with the gun."
Neil and the suspect wrestled outside for a bit while Bonnie called 911. Neil ended up with a gash on his arm from where the guy hit him with the end of the gun.
Overall, Neil's proud of his wife - except for one thing.
"She did the right thing. The only bad thing, she's opening that door. I told her before, don't open the door until I'm there!"
As for Bonnie....
"The cop said, 'I can't believe an 84-year-old did that.' I said to him, 'you should have known him when he was 24.'"
Neil ended up with 18 stitches in his arm.
The Randolph County Sheriff's Office said the suspect was arrested a few hours later in Montgomery County after he got into a wreck. Bonnie's detailed description helped deputies connect the dots.
