Oregon Gov. John Kitzhaber fell back on his training as an emergency room physician, performing CPR on an unconscious woman in downtown Portland on Monday night.
Kitzhaber, a Democrat, was on his way to dinner when he came across the woman in need. He ordered his driver to stop, got his security detail to call 911, and performed CPR until the paramedics arrived. KGW-TV, which first reported the incident, said the woman may have overdosed on drugs. She is expected to live.
"It was great to see him do his work and help out when his services were needed," Lt. Alan Ferschweiler, a fire department medic on the scene, told the Associated Press.
It's not the first time that the doctor-turned-politician has come to the rescue. During a 2010 gubernatorial debate, Kitzhaber helped a man who suffered a heart seizure until the paramedics arrived.
Kitzhaber is running for an unprecedented fourth term this November.
