PHOENIX, Ariz. - A Phoenix dad was arrested last week on suspicion of child abuse after a video showed him throwing his 22-month-old daughter into a pool, police said.

Corey Edmond McCarthy, 23, told police he was trying to teach the girl to be afraid of water and to punish her for dropping a small dog into the unfenced pool, said to Sgt. Trent Crump, a Phoenix police spokesman. He was arrested Saturday.

The girl's mother went to police with the video, which showed the toddler was unsupervised near the backyard pool for approximately 25 minutes before the throwing incident, Crump said. During that time, the girl dropped a small puppy into the water, Crump said.

In the video, McCarthy picks up the child and throws her nearly across the width of the pool before she hits the water, records show.

McCarthy's girlfriend is seen retrieving the toddler and handing her back to McCarthy, who sent her back into the pool, this time by dropping her into the water, records show.
