Police are investigating the death of a newborn whose mother awoke to find her unresponsive after falling asleep while breastfeeding her on May 23 in Independence Township.
The baby was born at home and delivered by a midwife around 2:30 a.m. last Friday in the 6100 block of Overlook, according to an Oakland County Sheriff's Office news release. The newborn was last seen alive at 5:50 a.m., while the mother was breastfeeding her.
The mother fell asleep with the baby in her arms and when she woke up, the baby was not breathing. The parents called 911 and the baby was transported to St. Joseph Hospital in Pontiac, where she was pronounced dead by a doctor.
The Oakland County Medical Examiner's office was notified and an autopsy to determine the cause of death is pending.
