A giraffe riding in an open-air truck died Thursday after its head smashed into a bridge on a South African highway, NBC News reports.

Several people posted photos on Twitter of two giraffes sticking their necks out of a truck as it approached the Garsfontein Road overpass along the N1 highway in Pretoria.

NBC News confirmed the photos and the death of the giraffe with Rick Allan with Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. He said the giraffe likely died instantly. He told the New York Post the SPCA will continue its investigation and determine if criminal charges are appropriate.

Many have noted a similar scene is depicted in 2013's Hangover 3.
