SPRINGFIELD, Ill. - U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin of Illinois is on his way to Ukraine.

Durbin leaves Thursday night with Arizona Sen. John McCain. He says the trip is a show of support for the country after Russia took over the Crimea region.

The pair plan to meet with government leaders and citizen groups. Durbin says he wants the country to know the U.S. Stands by them as they insist on free elections, and he wants to send a message to Russian president Vladimir Putin.
