ST. LOUIS (KSDK) - Drivers will have a hard time reaching downtown St. Louis this weekend.

Missouri Department of Transportation will close all lanes of Interstate 44, formerly Interstate 70, in both directions from Broadway to the Poplar Street Bridge at 8 p.m. Friday. The closure is in place to remove the Market and Chestnut Street bridges over the interstate.

As for alternate routes, The Eads Bridge is not an option. It will also be closed to ensure limited traffic issues. There will be signs indicating alternate routes. and there are few options due to construction in other areas.

Eastbound I-44 will be detoured up and over the closed portions of northbound Memorial to 3rd Street. Interstate traffic will get back on eastbound I-44 after the Martin Luther King Bridge.

Westbound I-44 traffic will detour down Broadway. Traffic heading for southbound I-55 will use Spruce to get to the interstate. Traffic heading for eastbound I-64 will take Gratiot to the 6th Street ramp.

All lanes are scheduled to reopen by 5 a.m. Monday.
