ST. LOUIS - Southbound Interstate 55 at the Bayless exit reopened late Tuesday morning after an accident involving a jackknifed tractor trailer forced the closure in south St. Louis County.

The highway reopened shortly after 11:30 a.m.

The crash occurred around 4:30 a.m. and forced police to close the highway while the truck could be removed from the traffic lanes. Traffic was blocked for over 30 minutes while police barricaded the area. Detours were expected to divert southbound traffic off the interstate.

A MoDOT vehicle was also involved in the accident.

Approximately 1,900 gallons of fuel leaked from the tanker into a dtich, prompting firefighters to build a wall of dirt around the fuel and spray the accident scene with foam to suppress harmful vapors. Firefighters said the cold air is working in their favor. If it were a warmer day, the vapors would pose more of a problem.

No injuries have been reported.

According to state police, the southbound lanes may not be reopened until noon.
