It's a bird! It's a plane! It's Superman ... looking very tortured.
The new trailer for Man of Steel, director Zack Snyder's take on the popular DC Comics superhero, shows Supes - played by Henry Cavill - decidedly more brooding than previous cinematic incarnations. (And with a beard!)
It's not too surprising, since one of the producers is Christopher Nolan, who's fresh off his own three modern and gritty takes on Batman.
The footage features Clark Kent as a boy learning of his incredible powers and saving fellow youngsters from certain doom on a sinking school bus, but being told by his pa Jonathan Kent (Kevin Costner) that the world might not be ready for somebody with his abilities. That seems to be a theme, as Superman is later shown in shackles and being surrounded by the military.
Of course, Earth is bound to be in peril so Superman will be there when he needs to save the day, and the powerful Boy Scout from Krypton is seen helping people and dealing with bad weather and bad guys. Plus, Superman rips off a seriously awesome ground-to-space jump move that has to be seen to be believed.
Michael Shannon, as the evil General Zod (who was played by Terrence Stamp opposite Christopher Reeve's Man of Steel in 1980's Superman II), is seen in passing, as are Diane Lane as Supes' adopted mom, Russell Crowe as his Kryptonian dad Jor-El, Laurence Fishburne as Daily Planet editor Perry White and Amy Adams as love interest Lois Lane.
Man of Steel is set to be released in theaters June 14.
