Two years ago Sesame Street swore they were just "best friends," but now, in the wake of Wednesday's Supreme Court rulings on gay marriage, Ernie and Bert, perhaps the country's most famous cohabitating bachelors, have come out as a couple.

At least on the cover of the latest issue of The New Yorker.

Titled "Moment of Joy," the illustration depicts Ernie resting his head on Bert's shoulder as his old buddy cradles him with his arm. The duo are watching an image of the court's nine justices on their TV.

"It's amazing to witness how attitudes on gay rights have evolved in my lifetime," the artist, Jack Hunter, tells the magazine's website. "This is great for our kids, a moment we can all celebrate." Hunter originally submitted his image unsolicited, via Tumblr.

Maybe Sesame is on board to confirm their beloved puppets' relationship status. On June 10, the show's official Twitter posted a mildly suggestive message from Bert:

"Ever notice how similar my hair is to Mr. T's? The only difference is mine is a little more 'mo,' a little less 'hawk.' "
