It was a night for passionate Latin dances -- and the unhappy first elimination of the new Dancing With the Stars season.
Which celeb was the first to be shown the door? Was it Bill Nye, the Science Guy and crowd favorite, who had the lowest scores last week?
Host Tom Bergeron explained that votes for tonight's performances will count toward next week's scores, but scores from judges Carrie Ann Inaba, Len Goodman and Bruno Tonioli for tonight's dances went toward tonight's elimination. Got it?
Here's how it went on Monday, Week 2:
Amber Riley worried about her "big" breasts during the jive because she was afraid they would be bouncing around too much. But she and Derek Hough showed that their jive was about much more than that as they kicked and flicked around the ballroom. Riley even did a cartwheel! Carrie Ann said there were "technical difficulties." Len said she needed to work on her footwork but it was "terrific." Bruno agreed, saying she was "irresistible." Scores: 8, 8, 8 = 24 Total: 51
Corbin Bleu and Karina Smirnoff blew out the house with their jive, which gave him a chance to reprise his High School Musical jump. The guy is already such a good dancer it doesn't seem fair, but you know how this show is. Carrie said his musicality was "spot on" and he's "exciting." Said Len: "You. Can. Dance." Bruno said, "Give me a break. This was a performance of dazzling brilliance." Scores: 9, 8, 9 = 26 Total: 50
Elizabeth Berkley Lauren and her partner Val Chmerkovskiy twirled and swiveled their hips to a lively and sexy samba. Steven Tyler was seen in the audience applauding her performance. The judges loved it. Len raved about her "energy." Bruno praised her "accuracy." They both noticed a few slip-ups. Carrie Ann said it was "sensual." Scores: 8, 9, 8 = 25 Total: 49
Christina Milian and her pro partner Mark Ballas did a fierce paso doble, which is what all paso dobles should be. But this one was Lady Gaga goth and brought fans to their feet, clapping along with the music. Bruno thought she had missed a step. Carrie Ann said she was "on fire," adding, "That was insane." Len said it was "terrific." Scores: 9, 8, 8 = 25 Total: 47
Jack Osbourne gave himself a hard time in a rehearsal segment, saying he got the "worst genes" of anyone in the family: "Fat, heart problems, MS, can't sing, can't act. Doomed." His parents, Sharon and Ozzy Osbourne, and sister, Kelly, were in the audience to hear it all and cheer him on. Sharon even dropped by her son's rehearsal and told him to "get that terrified look off your face." Their rumba was serious and moody, and Jack did fine. Len liked his "style," but added that he does "some weird things with his hands now and then." Bruno called it "smooth and sensuous and romantic." Carrie Ann called it "Game of Thrones"-like. Scores: 8, 8, 8 = 24 Total: 47
Brant Daugherty and Peta Murgatroyd steamed up the joint with a super-sexy rumba. The concept was to undress each other throughout it -- and they did. (Well, she took off his jacket.) Said Bruno: "Why stop at the jacket?" He said Daugherty did "well." Carrie Ann said they've got "chemistry" and he "wowed." Len said they are "terrific looking" but he could see that his feet were pigeon-toed. Scores: 8, 7, 8 = 23 Total: 45
Leah Remini still seems freaked out by the whole show. "I'm going through a personal big change for me and my family," she told her partner Tony Dovolani in a rehearsal segment. "The church (Scientology) is looking for me to fail so they can say to their parishioners, see what happens when you leave." Tony said he was "here to make sure she doesn't." Their samba was fiery and the crowd cheered loudly for them. Len said it was "terrific! Lovely hands!" Bruno said she had "so much flair. ... You can do it! Tonight, you were splendid." Carrie Ann, getting all hot and bothered: "You unleashed your samba goddess." Scores: 8, 8, 8 = 24 Total: 45
Snooki and partner Sasha Farber performed a sexy, serious rumba that tamed the usually goofy reality star. "I was in the moment," said Snooki. Carrie Ann said there were "pretty pictures" but she didn't "feel" the story from her. She also yelled at the pair for two lifts. Len thought it was "a little bit sharp," but "nice." Bruno told her she needs to learn how to "act" and "sustain the character." Scores: 6, 7, 7 = 20 Total: 43
Valerie Harper was shown in rehearsals falling down because of a strain in her knee. "I'm not going to let a little pain in my knee stop me." She battled through with partner Tristan MacManus, who was brought to tears watching her determination. She put a lot of flair into her paso doble, even if her footwork was shaky. Len said she seemed a "little bit nervous" about it, but called her "brave." Bruno noticed a couple of footwork mistakes but praised her anyway. Carrie Ann admitted it's hard to be critical of her, but said she "looked lost" toward the end. Scores: 6, 6, 7 = 19 Total: 40
Bill Engvall and partner Emma Slater rocked the house with a jive that had Bill shaking his bootie all over the ballroom. Carrie Ann called it "fantastic fun." Len said he "thoroughly enjoyed" watching Bill. Bruno said it was "so enjoyable." Scores: 7, 7, 7 = 21 Total: 39
Keyshawn Johnson said it's tough for him each week, traveling back and forth from ESPN in Connecticut to L.A. for the show. He worried that if he got kicked off he'd "hear about it all year long" from his sportscaster pals. His samba with partner Sharna Burgess brought some funk. Bruno loved it, saying he wasn't sure if "all of the things were legal." (Keyshawn got choked up saying how much he is loving the dancing experience.) Carrie Ann said he was "a little rough around the edges." Len admired his effort, saying he was definitely "working his assets." Scores: 6, 6, 6 = 18 Total: 35
Bill Nye and his partner, Tyne Stecklein, planned to use all the negative comments that came their way last week and channel them into their paso doble. A gang of Mensa members sat in the audience cheering on the Science Guy. At the end of his passionate dance, during which he tripped, the crowd chanted, "Bill, Bill, Bill!" Bruno said there was "actually some paso doble there." Carrie Ann said it was a "weird, bizarre masterpiece of insanity." Len liked the "fun" he put into the dance. Scores: 6, 5, 6 = 17 Total: 31
Some good news: Julianne Hough will sit in as a guest judge in two weeks for Len Goodman. "I really want to feel those paddles," she said during a break in the dancing action.
More good news: Bill Nye was safe!
The first celeb sent packing was ... Former NFL star Keyshawn Johnson. "For a guy that's never even bobbed his head in the car, the fact that I could have the experience of dance... is something amazing to me." He praised his partner, Sharna Burgess. "I wish I could have done more to help her out."
