ST. LOUIS (KSDK SPORTS) - So much for quarterback Mark Sanchez coming to the Rams. After coach Jeff Fisher acknowledged interest in Sanchez earlier in the week, the Rams finally closed the deal on the backup they wanted all along, signing Shaun Hill to a one-year contract worth a reported $1.75 million.

Hill, who turned 34 in January, had been with the Lions the last four seasons after previously playing for San Francisco and Minnesota. While with the 49ers, current Rams quarterbacks coach Frank Cignetti was an assistant and former Rams coach Mike Martz was the offensive coordinator. The current Rams offensive system has the same language as what Martz used.

The Rams tried to sign Hill in 2012, but he opted to remain with Detroit where he was comfortable with offensive coordinator Scott Linehan. But Linehan moved on to Dallas this offseason when the Lions' staff was fired after the season.

The Hill addition came one day after the Rams signed former Buffalo Bills defensive lineman Alex Carrington, who started the first three games of the 2013 season at left end before missing the remainder of the year because of a torn quadriceps.

The 6-5, 301-pound Carrington should provide versatility inside and outside, similar to the roles played by William Hayes and Eugene Sims, although Carrington is expected to mostly be a part of the tackle rotation.

Finally, league sources have indicated that running back Steven Jackson was not considered an unrestricted free agent for purposes of compensatory picks because the ability for Jackson to void was added to the deal in the final year.

Had Jackson reached the original contract incentives that would have enabled the final two years of his contract to naturally void, it would have qualified in the compensatory pick formula.
