Seattle Seahawks cornerback Richard Sherman has been named the cover star for Electronic Arts pro football simulation Madden NFL 15.
Sherman beat out Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton in an online vote featuring 16 NFL stars, including 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick and Colts QB Andrew Luck. Sherman topped Newton with 56% of the vote.
"It's great," says Sherman. "It's been a blessing and a journey."
Sherman becomes the third defensive player to appear on the front of the Madden NFL box, joining Ravens linebacker Ray Lewis and Steelers free safety Troy Polamalu. He's also the second Seahawk to appear on the cover of Madden. Running back Shaun Alexander fronted the cover of Madden NFL 07 in 2006.
Sherman sees his selection to the cover of Madden NFL 15 as a signal that fans show more respect for what defenses do on the field. "I think people are starting to appreciate defense a little more than they used to."
Fans cast 9.6 million votes during the course of the competition, which started on May 8.
The game launches August 26 for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PS3 and Xbox 360.
