COLUMBIA, Mo. - Sophomore wide receiver Levi Copelin is suspended for the 2014-15 season after testing positive for a banned substance, the NCAA confirmed Tuesday.

While the substance itself was not identified, Copelin released a statement saying it was an over-the-counter nutritional supplement. Copelin admitted to not checking with team trainers or strength coaches prior to taking the supplement.

"This was a stupid mistake on my part, and I'm very sorry that I put myself and my team in this situation," Copelin said.

Mizzou head coach Gary Pinkel said the suspension was an unfortunate situation, but Copelin bares the responsibility for not following a team procedure.

"Our strength coaches and trainers rely on our players to be careful of what they do on their own, and to always get approval from them first."

Pinkel said the team supports Copelin and expects him to return to the field next year.

Copelin recorded just three catches for 61 yards last season.
