(KSDK Sports) -- Following his first career complete game shutout on Tuesday night, Lance Lynn shared that Adam Wainwright had motivated him by offering regular reminders that he had yet to accomplish the feat.

"He thinks I'm too good not to have one so he made sure I knew about it," said Lynn. "That's why he is the competitor and leader of the staff that he his."

Wainwright had already left the clubhouse, but on Wednesday shared on his methods of bringing the best out in Lynn.

"Occasionally, guys need little helpful reminders," explaineinwright. "I try to find ways that each guy likes to be motivated and which guy responds to what–and he responds well to challenges. I constantly lay out that 'How long are you gonna go? Are you going to go your entire career without throwing a complete game one time or pitching in the ninth even? How long is it going to take you?' Just constantly jab him with that once a week or so."

Lynn's usual response was "challenge accepted" and on Tuesday he made good.

Besides the complete game and shutout, Wainwright has also provided challenges to Lynn regarding his win totals.

"It's awfully lonely up here at 5," Wainwright chided after moving ahead when he and Lynn both had four victories.

"You can't talk it and not do it," said Lynn of Wainwright's example and motivation. "You've got to walk the walk if you talk the talk. He won't say anything unless he's done it."

Wainwright leads the National League with eight wins (8-2) and a 1.67 ERA. Lynn improved to 6-2 with a 3.12 ERA after Tuesday's victory.
