ST. LOUIS (KSDK) - In what might be the most bizarre Cardinals pep rally so far this year, about a dozen bearded Birds fans shed their whiskers to send a message to the Boston Red Sox: "The Beard Stops Here"!
Cornbread, host of the Cornbread Show on WIL 92.3, served as the ringleader for Friday's rooftop shaving festival.
The Red Sox players have donned long, shaggy beards all season long. The team's worst-to-first season has captured the heart of New England and the players likeness to characters from "Duck Dynasty" has become a craze in Beantown. Fans who are able to have grown their own ZZ Top style beards. Still others pay up to $30 dollars for phony strap-on beards at Fenway Park.
"I've heard Boston described as the Hub of the Universe and the Athens of America," said Isaiah DiLorenzo, one of the bearded volunteers who braved the cold for the event. "I can't fathom why such a sophisticated city is so taken with a low-brow affectation like facial hair."
Jeff Flowerree, Collin Kossakoski, and Aaron Westhoelter also joined the crowd of about a dozen before sunrise at the top of the parking garage across from Busch Stadium.
"Last night, the Red Sox lost their momentum," thundered Cornbread from his traditional roost above Cardinal nation. "This morning---they lose the magical power of their beards."
