(KSDK Sports) -- You can never have enough depth in the bullpen, and with Jason Motte needing more recovery time following last seasons Tommy John surgery, the Cardinals made a move this morning by signing free-agent pitcher David Aardsma to a minor league contract. The right-hander was released from his non-roster invite by Cleveland last week after making six Cactus League appearances for the appearances in which he went 1-0 with a 3.00 ERA and six strikeouts in six innings pitched.
Aardsma, 32, was 2-2 with a 4.31 ERA for the New York Mets last season, striking out 36 batters in 39.2 innings pitched. He missed the 2011 season due to Tommy John surgery but in the prior two seasons he recorded 69 saves for the Seattle Mariners.
Aardsma has been assigned uniform no. 53.
