(KSDK Sports) -- After putting the college baseketball world on notice, Saint Louis begins their '13-'14 season tonight as they hosts Fontbonne University Thursday in the Billikens' lone men's basketball exhibition tilt of the season. Game time at Chaifetz Arena is scheduled for 7 p.m.
SLU posted a 28-7 overall record a season ago, a school record for victories. The Billikens went 13-3 in conference play and captured the Atlantic 10 Conference champion. The Billikens captured the 2012-13 A-10 regular-season title outright, then rolled to three consecutive victories at the A-10 Championship at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, N.Y.
The Billikens claimed a No. 4 seed in the NCAA Tournament last season and knocked off New Mexico State in the second round in San Jose. SLU came up short in its bid to advance to the Sweet Sixteen when it fell to Oregon in the third round.
Jim Crews, the NABC and Sporting News National Coach of the Year, had the interim tag removed from his title April 12, 2013. In 25 years as a collegiate head coach, Crews boasts a 382-355 record.
Senior forward Dwayne Evans, an Atlantic 10 Conference Player of the Year candidate, led the Billikens in scoring (14.0 ppg) and rebounding (7.7 rpg) a season ago. In the Billikens' five postseason games, Evans registered 21 ppg. The Billikens also return the senior guard tandem of Jordair Jett and Mike McCall Jr. A two-time A-10 All-Defensive team pick, Jett has 123 career steals and needs two more to crack SLU's all-time top 10 list. McCall Jr. led the team with 46 steals last year and was second in assists.
Saint Louis was picked to finish second in the league by a vote of A-10 head coaches and media. Dwayne Evans was a preseason first-team All-Conference selection, while Jordair Jett was named to the preseason All-Conference third team as well as the preseason All-Defensive team.
Fontbonne University competes in NCAA Division III's St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC). Last year, the Griffins went 8-17 overall and 6-10 in the conference.
The Billikens open the regular season next Friday, Nov. 8, at 7:30 p.m. against Southeast Missouri at Chaifetz Arena. That game is part of a Billiken basketball doubleheader with the women's team facing Missouri at 4:30 p.m.
