(KSDK Sports) -- If Michael Sam does open the regular season on an NFL roster, it will have to be on another team.

The league's first openly gay active player was among 21 players waived by the St. Louis Rams as the club whittled down its roster to the 53-man limit on Saturday.

And just a few hours after learning his fate, Michael Sam took to social media to publicly thank the Rams as well as the St. Louis fan base.

Sam went on to tweet:

"(allowing me to) show I can play at this level. I look forward to continuing to build on the progress I made here toward a long and successful career. The most worthwhile things in life rarely come easy, this is a lesson I've always known. The journey continues."
