SOCHI, Russia - Johnny Weir is in Sochi, but his thoughts are with the people of Ukraine.
Weir said he was wearing his hair in "a traditional Ukrainian braid" on Wednesday in support of people in Kiev. At least 25 people have been killed in the capital city in clashes between protesters and Ukrainian riot police this week.
"I was planning, before I came, on doing braids because it's the style here," Weir said. "I wanted to do it today because everything is going so rough over there."
Weir, working as an NBC commentator in Sochi, has always been well-versed in international affairs. But the turmoil in Ukraine hits close to home for the figure skater, who has worked with Galina Zmievskaya since 2007. Zmievskaya, who coached Olympic champions Viktor Petrenko and Oksana Baiul, is originally from Odessa, Ukraine. She moved to the United States after Baiul won gold at the 1994 Olympics.
