U.S. Speedskating saved its best for last.
In the final skating event of the Sochi Games, America snapped its medal-less streak by claiming silver in the short track men's 5,000 meters team relay, narrowly losing out on gold to a Russian team buoyed by a rollicking home crowd.
The silver came in the 20th of 20 speedskating events – 12 in long track, eight in short track – and salvages, if only in the slightest of degrees, U.S. Speedskating's altogether miserable two weeks in Sochi.
If one event, at least, the U.S. improved upon its performance in Vancouver: American skaters won only bronze in the men's team relay four years ago.
For the U.S., the silver erases the possibility of leaving the Winter Games without a single medal in speedskating's two disciplines, something the USA had not done since 1984. ?
