ST. LOUIS (KSDK) – The U.S. team will be full of the new generation of tennis when it faces France in the Fed Cup this month in St. Louis.
Wednesday, U.S. Fed Cup Captain Mary Joe Fernandez named Sloane Stephens, Madison Keys, Varvara Lepchenko and Christina McHale to the World Group Playoff match.
Fan favorites Serena and Venus Williams will not participate.
The teams will play in a best-of-five series April 19-20 with two singles matches, two reverse singles matches and a doubles match at Chaifetz Arena.
Stephens is ranked No. 18 in the world and will bring her big-match experience to the courts, but players such as Keys and McHale have been rising stars in recent years' tournaments.
The U.S. will face France's team of Alize Cornet, Caroline Garcia, Virgine Razzano and Kristina Mladenovic.
At stake in the match will be a sport in the World Group for 2015 and the chance of a Fed Cup title.
The U.S. landed in a playoff match after losing to Italy, 3-1, in the Fed Cup quarterfinals in Cleveland. Overall, the U.S. leads France 11-1 in Fed Cup play, and 3-1 in Fed Cup playoffs.
This is the second time the Fed Cup will be played in Missouri, as it was previously held in Springfield in 2002.
Tickets are still on sale for the match-ups through Ticketmaster.
