ST. LOUIS (KSDK) – In anticipation of dangerously cold weather, the 12th and Park Rec Center overflow shelter will open Sunday night.

It costs approximately $1,000 a day to operate the shelter. The city had initially budgeted for 20 days based on last winter, and has received 10 additional days of funding. However, at this rate, some officials are concerned that the shelter will exhaust its funding.

"We simply will not close the Overflow Shelter on dangerously cold nights," Mayor Francis Slay said. "While this year's demand has exceeded last year, providing shelter is a priority and will continue."

The city has provided 2,341 meals and bed nights this winter. More than 300 homeless adults and children regularly utilize the shelter.
