77-year-old drowns while checking water levels in Jefferson County

Cars can be swept away by water on the roadway.

JEFFERSON CO. - A 77-year-old Jefferson County man drowned Sunday afternoon after going out to check the rising water levels near his house.

Assistant Chief Brian Gaudet said the man left his home in Jefferson County shortly after 3:30 p.m. Sunday. When he did not return, his family went out to look for him. They found some of his things near Belews Creek and called for help.

He's been identified as Clifford Brandt of Hillsboro. 

Rescuers with the Missouri Water Patrol, Hillsboro Fire Protection District and a few others found his body downstream. 

Gaudet said they have performed multiple water rescues Sunday. In his press conference, Governor Eric Greitens said 111 evacuations and 136 rescue operations were carried out as of 3 p.m. Sunday.
