Flash flooding strands several drivers

ST. CHARLES COUNTY, Mo. – Both Highway 79 and Highway P are reopened after flash flooding forced their closure during the Tuesday evening commute.

You can blame it on the rain: cars and property underwater and thousands of dollars in damage.

Gary Hill in St. Paul says he'll salvage what he can from his garages where he and fellow mechanics work on side projects in their spare time. Flooding washed his home off its foundation in 2008 and he relocated his home but kept the garages. A levee around his property was no help. It protects his land from water that usually approaches from swollen rivers and from the opposite direction near Highway 79 and Old Highway 79.

"It was running over the road and you couldn't even pass here," described Hill. "We'll salvage what we can. I won't come back."

Just down the road drivers found themselves under water near Highway P in waste high water. First responders say they answered several calls for water rescues but no one was seriously hurt with the water receding about as fast as it rose in most places.
