Frigid temps force MoDOT crews to adjust strategy

ST. LOUIS (KSDK) – Due to record snowfall and subzero temperatures, Missouri Department of Transportation crews have had to adjust their approach to clearing the state's roads.

Frigid temperatures make salt and other chemical treatments effective on roadways. To counteract this, late Sunday, crews were primarily plowing and using sand and cinders to provide traction on snow-packed roadways.

MoDOT cautions that roads will remain all-but-impassable Monday, and urges drivers to exercise utmost caution.

"I would encourage everyone to be very careful, give our snow plows plenty of room, and check on road conditions if you do have to travel," St. Louis District Maintenance Engineer Becky Allmeroth said in a news release.

Drivers are recommended to check MoDOT's Traveler Information Map for the latest road information, and keep essentials in their car in the event they're stranded.
