Quick ways to save your home from winter damage

ST. LOUIS (KSDK) – Winter weather can take a toll of some of our homes.

With warmer weather approaching, Dave Thompson with Woods Basement Systems has advice on a couple of quick checks that could stop additional home damage.

He recommends walking around your house and checking your gutters. Snow and ice could become too heavy, pulling the gutters away from the house. If that happens, water can go behind the gutters and fall near your home's foundation, leading to a wet basement.

"So you need to check to make sure the gutters are fastened securely to the fascia and soffit because you don't want that water going behind the gutter, right next to the house, down into the basement," Thompson said.

Thompson also recommends going into your basement and checking to see if new cracks have developed or old cracks have become worse.
