Jacob Long is an Emmy and Associated Press Award-winning reporter at 5 On Your Side in St. Louis, Missouri, and specializes in investigations.

This is Jacob’s second stint at 5 On Your Side and he is thrilled to be back in his hometown. He originally joined the team in 2015 as a general assignment multi-skilled journalist. In 2017 he moved to Boston where he freelanced as a general assignment reporter for a year at WFXT Boston 25 News. He returned to 5 On Your Side in 2018 as an investigative reporter.

Jacob was born just across the river in Granite City and is a proud graduate of the public school system (Go Warriors!). He knew at an early age he wanted to tell the stories of the St. Louis region.

“I knew as a child I wanted to become a reporter because I liked talking and was generally curious about everything,” said Jacob. “As I grew older, I realized as journalists, we get to be the first draft of history. My favorite part is serving and informing my community by reporting on the issues and events that impact them every day.”

Throughout his time in news he’s had many memorable moments in front of and behind the camera. One story that sticks out is from his time reporting in Florida. He told the story of the birth and successful separation of conjoined twin boys.

“It was such a high-risk and extremely rare situation for this small family, and they trusted me to tell their story from start to finish,” said Jacob. “Being at the hospital the day they were delivered and successfully separated was one of the most emotional and meaningful days of my life.”

Jacob is a graduate of Illinois State University where he earned a B.S. in broadcast journalism. Before moving home, he was a reporter and anchor at WMBD-TV in Peoria, Illinois and our TEGNA sister station First Coast News in Jacksonville, Florida.

“After every story I tell, no matter how long or short, I find something special about it that sticks with me and makes me a better reporter,” he said. “I’m in love with St. Louis and a major champion for this city and region. It’s such a privilege to be here to tell my community’s story.”

Jacob is newly married, and the proud father of a miniature golden retriever named Tucker. In his spare time, he enjoys working out, traveling, and eating and drinking his way around the city (hence the working out part).
