Meat and whiskey lovers will want to check this restaurant out

New in the Lou: Midwestern Meat and Drink

ST. LOUIS — The Midwest is known for its meats and when it comes to good ole fashion barbecue, St. Louis is a perfect spot.

Midwestern Meats and Drink is all about barbecue and whiskey. It’s a new restaurant that just opened downtown on March 1.

“I think the difference is the attention to detail. The love that we put into it,” said executive chef, Ben Welch.

Co-owner, Stephen Savage, said he’s worked in the restaurant business for a long time and was excited about opening a restaurant that’s all about barbecue.

Midwestern is in the old Flying Saucer restaurant which closed last year.

“We did a full-on gut. We gutted the bar, the entire front area. We took out sections of the canopy that we’re doing right now,” said Savage.

There’s also an outdoor patio in the back where they have live music.

Welch said all of their meats are smoked for about 17 hours with oak and cherry.

His favorite is the pastrami.

Whiskey drinkers will love their selections.

“We have everything from a Tony Cabinet $5 pour to all the way up to a $200, 7-year, Heaven Hill pour,” said Savage.

If you’re ambitious, you may want to try their Crispy Pig Head. It’s a half head smoked then stuffed with Caribbean jerk, Korean Q, jalapenos and tortillas. It’s $45 and you have to order it 48 hours in advance.
