Art you can squeeze

South City woman makes modern handmade rag dolls

In what would be most people's dining room silverware has been replaced by a sewing machine that's been humming for the last seven or eight years.

"I lot of these don't have all their clothes yet because I'm making those this week," April Tate explains.

She has sewn most of her life, but started making plush toys when she couldn't find what she was looking for, for her son.

"It's been kind of a progression I started with things he liked, like hedgehogs and raccoons and stuff like that and it's just kind of grown in subject matter since then, now I do a lot of dolls."

They are modern handmade rag dolls

"They're all made from the same basic pattern, but they all have different hair, different clothes, different outfits so they're similar, but slightly different," Tate points out.

Cute, cuddly toys she makes under the name Riley Construction.

"I like to build a character and a story around the character so for me they have little personalities and backstories. One of my all time favorites is actually the one with the swimming suit."

It's a doll inspired by her grandmother.

"She was kind of a bathing beauty, she was gorgeous and she loved the beach."

She is constantly pinning together new ideas.

"This is a new design called Rebel and she's covered in tattoos which I hand drew."

She has something for everyone.

"So these are little fishing poles I made and they have a little magnet in the bobber so whenever you hook it to a fish it sticks," she says as she catches a fish.

So April Tate might be following a rather old fashioned pattern, but it's one that's always attracting new fans.
