Indiana Great Escape: Family fun with cave exploration

Courtney continues her Indiana adventures by checking out some really cool, 50 degrees all year, caves.

If you have ever been to Indiana, there is a good chance you were standing above some kind of cave. There are hundreds of discovered caves all over the state, and Courtney Budelman got to visit two of them as part of our show’s Indiana Great Escape.

Family fun is just three hours away at Indiana Caverns. They just opened a new zip-coaster called Bat Chaser. It is a smoother, gentler version of a roller coaster or zip-line, and is a great contrast to the 40-mile long cave below. This is the longest cave in the state, and even has an underground boat tour. In some places it is deep enough for a four-story waterfall.

Courtney takes a look at Big Bone Mountain, a room inside the cave, named for the treasure trove of ice aged bones located within the cave. This is one of the more newly discovered areas of the cavern system.

Nearby, Marengo Cave boasts another set of underground treasures discovered a couple centuries earlier. This site has become a National Natural Landmark and has rooms varying in size from ones you can stand in, to ones you have to crawl through.

You can go back above ground to try out the new race track, or get lost in the just-built Miner’s Maze.

It’s all waiting for you and your family just a short drive away in Southern Indiana!
