What you should know when it comes to watercraft liability

Stephen Schultz of Schultz & Myers gives some tips and things to keep in mind.

ST. LOUIS — With Memorial Day weekend around the corner, many people will be heading to the lake or the river to celebrate. Stephen Schultz of Schultz & Myers offered some tips and things to keep in mind when it comes to watercraft liability.

Many of the kids and adults want to jump on wave runners, and the laws for these have changed over the years. If you are planning to ride or operate a wave runner, you are required to have a boating certification card. For this, you simply take a course that can be taken online and get it approved. While on the wave runner, you must have the card with you, as well as a photo ID in case you are pulled over.

As for age requirements, you cannot operate a wave runner if you are under 14-years-old unless you have someone at least 16 or older with you supervising.

When it comes to insurance, it’s a common misconception that wave runners are under homeowner’s insurance, but this is not the case. Before getting on a wave runner or letting your kids get on one, make sure it’s covered.
