Keep your air clean to avoid winter allergies

Find out what might be causing winter allergies in your home.

As the weather cools down and we head indoors for the winter, people who have allergies can suffer from poor indoor air quality. CEO of Allergy Standards Dr. John McKeon is here to tell us more.

When it comes to seasonal allergies, many of us think of spring and summer. What do we need to know as we look ahead into late fall and the winter months? Dr. McKeon explains that there is a spike in asthma and allergies around this time of year as we seal up our homes. Many things we do to make our homes more welcoming for our guests actually may have a negative impact on air quality.

During the holiday season, Dr. McKeon says these “cozy culprits” can affect air quality. First, he mentions strongly scented candles that can mask other issues. There is also a lot more cooking in the home so there could be problems with ventilation, moisture, and particulates. Even just having pets inside more often can put different things in the air.

So, what can we do to avoid poor air quality and keep our air clean? You can start by actually cleaning the air. A good air filter is very important that has been certified. Dr. McKeon recommends the brand Filtrete. You can also be cautious of source control and being sure you keep clean.
