Everyone wants their child to be healthy and that starts with a good diet and exercise.
The Healthy Schools Healthy Communities initiative helps bring those good habits into St. Louis Public School classrooms.
This weekend they're partnering with BJC School Outreach for the Double Dutch Showcase event which encourages kids to stay active.
At Gateway Michael School being healthy is something they practice year round. They've been awarded one of the healthiest schools in America for the last few years. This school serves students with serious health issues and disabilities.
All thanks to a grant from the Missouri Foundation for Health, they were able to start a community garden to harvest all types of vegetables.
"They are very active in our garden. Most students and staff, we eat out in the garden all year round. We plant, we eat, we share with the community," said Petra Baker, principal of Gateway Michael School.
The Double Dutch showcase event is this Saturday from 11 to 2 p.m. They're expecting around 300 people. Anyone is invited to attend.
